Geography of this region
Cold Winters & mountainous but fertile soils, warmer summers and a longer growing season than the New England Colonies. This made growing food more possible.

New York & New Jersey
Originally founded by the dutch (called new netherlands). This becomes a major center for trade and new jersey eventually separates.
Fun Fact- William of Orange, a prince in the Netherlands, took control of England during the "glorious revolution" which is the reason England gained a law-making parliament. William of Orange was married to Mary, whose father was the King of England. Together they took the English throne. When this happened, William's father gave England control of New Netherlands which was renamed.

It was founded by the Virginia Trading Company which was originally formed to find gold but quickly turned to the cash crop tobacco. Many colonists died of starvation due to refusing to farm. John Smith created a "no work, no eat" policy to help

Port cities were created because of their geography. This style of geography is called a natural harbor. Oceans are rough waters, which makes dock on land without putting a hole in your ship nearly impossible. Natural harbors shield the ships from the oceans waves and are deep enough to create docks that won't damage ships.

Georgia
In England, people that couldn't pay their bills were known as "debtor". If debtor's went too long without paying the people they owned, they were put in prison. Georgia was founded as a debtor's prison. Instead of going to an actual prison, they were charitably allowed to start a new life in Georgia!
fun fact- Great Britain was actually running out of space for prisons. Before proposing Georgia, they actually started using ships that were stuck on sandbars off the coast of England. One day, a candle on one of the ships caught fire can all the prisoners passed away. This encouraged the creation of Georgia.

Mercantilism
Mercantilism was an economic policy that dictated colonies must produce raw materials for the mother country. The Mother Country (England) would then produce the finished goods that profited much more money. The Navigation Acts helped Mercantilism by preventing the American Colonies from trading with countries other that Great Britain.
