During the Second Continental Congress, leaders began drafting the Declaration of Independence. The main author was Thomas Jefferson, with help from John Adams. It was signed on July 4, 1776. It listed grievances the colonists had with King George III. A few of the grievances were cutting off Americans’ trade with the world (the Navigation Acts), “imposing taxes without our consent” (taxation without representation), corrupt judges and courts, and the Quartering Act. Jefferson also included his version of John Locke’s unalienable (natural) rights; all men have the right to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness.

Valley Forge (white card)

  • Many Patriot soldiers died due to lack of supplies

Fun fact- George Washington actually performed what we would consider a version of a vaccine on his men. There was a smallpox outbreak at the camp in valley forge, which was killing off many soldiers. He took a small amount of the virus from a sick man, and forced the rest of the camp to get infected with a very small amount. This led to all of the people at valley forge getting sick, but quickly recovering and then being immune to the disease. Some did die, but not nearly as many as the disease itself was killing.
