Making Predictions, Finding Word Meaning, Conclusions/Inferences

Open Ended

---A prediction is a good guess about something that will happen at a later time.---

Write the name of a TV show or movie for which you saw previews before you watched it.

Open Ended

Write clues you used to predict whether or not you would like the TV show or movie.

• Ask yourself, "What do I already know about the things I am reading about?"

• Use what you have learned from your own experiences and the clues you have to make your predictions.

• in the pictures

Making a prediction is a way of using clues from a reading passage, as well as things you already know, to make a good guess about what might happen next.

Making Predictions

When you think about what might happen next in a reading passage, you are MAKING A PREDICTION.

Open Ended

Write what you think the word intact means.

(It's okay if you don't know the real meaning. Just. make a good guess.)

Open Ended

Someone says to you: "Many items were damaged when I dropped the box, but the vase remained intact."

Write what you think the word intact means now.

These clues are called CONTEXT CLUES.

• Context clues are often in a sentence around the unknown word and can be BEFORE or AFTER the word.

• Synonyms of the unknown word are often context clues.

• Antonyms of the unknown word are often context clues.

• A comparison or a definition often provides clues to the meaning of an unknown word.

When you figure out the meaning of a word using other words around, you are

FINDING WORD MEANING IN CONTEXT.

Finding Word Meaning in Context

Words and phrases around an unknown word often provide clues to the word's meaning.

Open Ended

Write something that you figured out on your own about someone in your family.

Open Ended

Write the clues that helped you figure this out.

To Draw a Conclusion or Make an Inference...

• pay attention to people, plces and objects that aren't fully presented

• use details that are given in the reading passage and from your own life to figure it out.

Whenever you figure out something that is not directly stated in a reading passage, you are

DRAWING A CONCUSION or MAKING AN INFERENCE. ​

Details are sometimes not clearly stated or explained in a reading passage,

and you need to draw your own conclusions and make your own educated guess.
