Energy​

​ Energy is all around us and we use it every day. Some examples:

  • Example 1: When you walk or do any physical activity, you use the muscles in your body which consume energy so that you can move.

  • Example 2: When you open a window, energy from the Sun enters through the window and warms the air in the room.

  • Example 3: When you switch on the light, electrical energy reaches the light bulb through the power cable.

Energy

​Energy is what is exchanged when any type of physical or chemical change occurs. For this reason, it is described as a property that is visible in transformations.

For example, petrol is burned in the motor of a car and makes it move. In this example, the transformation is a chemical reaction and the energy produced is transferred to the mechanism that moves the vehicle.

Energy

​ENERGY in the International System of Units (SI), is measured in joules (J).

Other units are also commonly used, although they do not belong to this system, such as the calorie(cal), which usually indicates the energy content of food, and the kilowatt hour (kW/h), which is the unit used to measure the electricity consumption of a home.

  • ​It is conserved: energy does not appear from nowhere and it does not disappear. In any transformation, the energy that is lost by one body is gained by another.

  • It transforms: energy can be converted into different forms. For example, in a hydroelectric factory, the mechanical energy of water is transformed into electrical energy.

  • It is transferred: energy can move from one body to another.

  • It is stored: energy can be stored, for example, in batteries.

  • It is degraded: in all processes some of the energy is transformed into a part that cannot be used to cause a new transformation, and for this reason it is said to have degraded.
