How does an organism get food from its environment?

An organism (or living thing) gets food, water, shelter, and other things it needs to live, grow, and reproduce from its environment. The environment that provides these needs is called a habitat. For an organism to be successful it must interact with both living and nonliving parts of its habitat.

  • An organism interacts with ​both he living and nonliving parts of its habitat.

  • ​The parts of a habitat that are living, or once living, and interact with an organism are called biotic factors.
