Lesson: Les pronoms relatifs (Qui/Que)
By Madame G
2
What's weird about these sentences?
-A burglar is a person. A burglar steals things.
-I live in a house. The house has a garden.
-Amazon delivers packages. The packages are delivered weekly.
-Ella is a teenager. Ella stays up late playing video games.
-You take a bus to school. The bus is very noisy.
3
In English, we don't usually repeat the same words over and over because it sounds weird and robotic, right?
So what do we do instead to avoid that? Let's explore.
Some text here about the topic of discussion.
4
practice: keep the same meaning but make the sentence less awkward.
5
a burglar is a person. a burglar steals things.
6
a burglar is a person who steals things.
7
i live in a house. the house has a garden.
8
i live in a house that has a garden.
9
Amazon delivers packages. The packages are delivered weekly.
10
Amazon delivers packages that are delivered weekly.
11
Ella is a teenager. Ella stays up all night playing video games.
12
Ella is a teenager that stays up all night playing video games.
13
those linking words are known as "relative pronouns" and they help us connect information & avoid repetition
I.E. I want to see the movie. Everyone is talking about the movie.
I want to see the movie THAT everyone is talking about.
In French, we use "Qui" and "Que" as our relative pronouns.
14
15
How do you know when to use each one? Let's discuss.
qui vs. que
16
QUI goes before a VERB
EXAMPLE: LE CHIEN QUI MANGE
QUE goes before a NOUN
EXAMPLE: LE BUS QUE JASON ATTEND
Note: the green is a verb, and blue is a noun
les pronoms relatifs: qui vs. que
17
Let's practice!
Choose either QUI or QUE to complete each sentence
18
j'ecoute la musique ______ tu aimes
19
j'ecoute la musique QUE tu aimes
20
le chat ______ steven achete est mechant
21
le chat QUE steven achete est mechant
22
clark lis un livre ______ est interessant
23
clark lis un livre QUI est interessant
24
nous faisons un gateau ______ est delicieux
25
nous faisons un gateau QUI est delicieux
26
BUT WAIT...
Don't forget about the vowel rule! If you are using "QUE" and the word next to it starts with a vowel, you have to take off the 'e' and add an apostrophe. This rule does NOT apply for "QUI".
Ex: Le giraffe que elle aime >>> Le giraffe qu'elle aime
Le film qui est interessant >>> Le film qui est interessant (no change)
