"Stay Out of Our Life"
[s]Joe spends the summer at his family's half finished house in Sequim trying to earn enough money to pay for tuition when school starts again. When Joe returns to college he cannot afford to take Joyce out on dates.
Joe wants to reconnect with his family but he does not know where they are living. So when Joe finds out they are living in Seattle, near where he rows in the afternoons (pg89), he knocks on the door. Then Thula answers and tells him to stay out of their lives.
Chapter 13 Summary
"Almost Without Pain"
[s]Joe wants to bond with his crew members on the train to the national championships in NY but they laugh at him when he plays his guitar. So Joe feels rejected by his crew and then has to compete in a race that pits rich vs poor. Then Joe and his crew win the race and surprised everyone. "They looked like they were simply out for an afternoon paddle, wide-eyed western boys wonder what all the fuss was about."(pg81)
