The epistemological view of positivism

Positivistic epistemology relies on the gathering of data through sense-perception (empiricism) and its interpretation is carried out within strict scientific generalized laws based on the principle of reductionism and demanding reliability and validity. Methodological rigor is the mainstay of positivistic epistemology (Park et al., 2020).

The epistemological view of positivism

Focuses on the importance of objectivity and evidence in searching for truth and the world is unaffected by the researcher. Also, in positivism, facts and values are very distinct, thus making it possible to conduct an objective and value-free inquiry ( Snape & Spencer, 2003 ).

Objectivism

The essence of objectivism derives from the acceptance of natural science as a paradigm to study human knowledge and, necessarily, employs means and methods for data collections and data interpretations similar to those used in natural science including hypothesis testing, causal explanations, and modeling.

Why do we use these methods?

Because the main purpose is to acquire proven knowledge of facts that can be proven, not only limited to assumptions and should be done according to the stages of thinking:

1. Theological stage 2. Metaphysical stage 3. Positivist stage

Critiques to positivist thinking

The rejection of the positivist thinking and tradition was based on the ground that if rules and laws are only derived from observation, then it is also quite possible that a future observation proves an exception to a current rule or law ( Ormston et al, 2014 ).
