Local climate change levels

Temperature - Local temperature is already up 1oC. This will increase to 1.5oC by 2040 and 2oC with we cut emissions or 3.5oC if we do not.

​Sea level rise - Global average of 30cm by 2060 will be sooner and more severe in parts of New Zealand.

​Storms - Occurrence and intensity will increase with heavy winds and rainfall.

The effects of these changes

  • Increase in heavy rain

  • Increased coastal erosion

  • ​Increase number of droughts and their length

  • ​Harder to grow crops and raise livestock

  • ​Damage to ecosystems around New Zealand

  • ​Increase in water-borne diseases
