FOR STARTERS
WHAT EVEN IS AN ESSAY?
In short, an essay is a piece of writing that analizes a certain topic. In this case, you will be writing an opinion essay, this is, an essay that presents your personal opinion on the topic given.
Essays traditionally consist of three defined parts: an Introduction, a Body and a Conclusion.
In next slide we will analyze each part.
3
You can begin your introduction with some background information on the topic, then you can follow that information with your opinion.
"According to many, city life can have a very negative effect on teenagers. In my opinion, this is a wrong belief, as city life offers plenty of positive experiences for teens."
The introduction is the first thing you should write. In it, you will present the topic and your opinion on it. You can also mention the subtopics you will be developing in the body of your essay.
I: THE INTRODUCTION.
TIP: your introduction shouldn't be longer than one paragraph!
4
I: THE INTRODUCTION
example paragraph
Many people debate over whether city life is better than life in the countryside. To me, life in the countryside is the best option for young people, due to factors such as the lack of pollution, the entertainment options, and the tranquility.
5
I: THE INTRODUCTION
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THESE INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPHS?
Many people said the city life is bad for young people, in my opinion, it depens on the aspect and the differents views.
There are different reasons why we can say that the city life is bad for young people, but we can say why can be a good life too. I think it depends of our rhythm of life.
6
Some useful language for the body of your essay is:
Firstly, secondly, finally
In first; second; third place...
In addition...
For instance; for example...
The body of your essay will most likely be the longest part of it. The most common way to write a body is to write a full paragraph for each note you should talk about. In each part of your body, you will be giving information that SUPPORTS your opinion.
II: THE BODY.
TIP! Remember NOT to title your paragraphs. It should be obvious what topic you're discussing in them!
7
Ii: THE body
example paragraph
Firstly, one of the most important points that prove that country life is better is the lack of pollution. The city is full of air, sonic, and luminic contamination. In the biggest cities in the world, some days people can't see due to the amounts of smoke from factories and cars. At nighttime, stars cannot be seen in many cities because of all the lights. And the amounts of sounds can cause higher stress and health problems in big cities' inhabitants. None of this is present in the countryside, which has fresh air, natural sounds, and clear night skies.
8
iI: THE body
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THESE body PARAGRAPHS?
Firs thing is the pollution, it can be a problem in cities because of all the cars and factories. But we can try to make things better by using less technology and taking care of the nature.
As a result of the transports, the fabrics and other contamination things, in the city we have a problem that it’s the pollution that affects the air and the visual.
9
maintain cohesion in your text.
Some helpful language for your conclusion can be:
To sum up/In conclusion...
It is clear that...
In my opinion...
The conclusion marks the end of your essay. Once you've explored each subtopic, all there is left to do is to repeat your opinion. You can briefly mention the subtopics you talked about earlier in the conclusion, so as to
III: THE CONCLUSION.
Remember to be as clear as possible! Your conclusion doesn't need to be too long, but it needs to agree with the rest of your work.
10
Iii: THE conclusion
example paragraph
To sum up, I believe country life is a far better option for young people than city life. This is because of the factors I have mentioned, such as the lack of pollution, the different sources of entertainment, and the relaxation that country life provides. It is clear to me that living in the country is the best choice for any young person.
11
iIi: THE conclusion
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THESE conclusion PARAGRAPHS?
In conclusion, I think city life is better, because you have a lot of oportunities, but in can be unhealthy because the pollution.
To sum up, the life in the city is very unhealthy in differents aspects to young people but also there positive aspects like know a lot of people, better education and services, more activities to do, and others.
