19th century Sir Thomas Raffles from Britain and negotiates treaty to establish Singapore as a trading hub
Singapore becomes home to people of China, India, the Malay peninsula.
Unrest leads to separation of groups into different areas, e.g., Chinatown
First settlements were established from AD 1298-1299 by the Chinese.
14th century Malay Buddhists of Srivijaya found Singapura - 'The lion city' which was ruled by five kings.

1959 elections are held and the first Singapore government is elected.
1964 Malaysia is formed and Singapore to be absorbed into Malaysia.
9 August 1965 after talks break down to join Malaysia Singapore declares itself an independent nation.
8 December 1941 Singapore is attacked from the North by the Japanese overwhelming British soldiers lead to the capture of Singapore.
After the Japanese surrender in 1945 Singapore handed over to the British.
In 1946 Singapore declared a British Colony
