  • Christianity developed in the province of Judea out of Jewish tradition in the first century CE, spread through the Roman Empire. In 313 AD, the Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, which accepted Christianity: 10 years later, it had become the official religion of the Roman Empire

  • Christianity was influenced by the historical contexts in which it developed

  • The word under the Jesus fish is (ΙΧΘΥΣ), (Iota, Chi, Theta, Upsilon, Sigma)

  • The early Christian church had to become better organized in order to unite its many followers. It also had to make sure that Christian communities shared similar beliefs and practices

  • Early church leaders used the Roman Empire as a model. Like the empire, the church was ruled by a hierarchy of officials. A hierarchy is an organization with different levels of authority. Leaders of the church were known as the clergy

  • In the early church, only men were allowed to be members of the clergy. Regular church members - the worshipers - were called the laity. In this hierarchy, archbishops had the most authority. Priests had the least.

  • The five most powerful archbishops were each in charge of an entire city. These leaders were called patriarchs. The bishops decided the true teachings of the Church. Accepted teachings became doctrine Teachings that the bishops rejected were heresies. Those teachings that the bishops deemed heresies were teachings that went against the Christian faith

The Mongols

  • The Mongols were a nomadic people who lived in the steppe region of Central Asia. For centuries, the Mongols were divided into different clans, with each clan being ruled by a single leader, known as a khan

  • Beginning in the late 1100s, a khan named Temujin began to conquer his rival khans in an effort to unite the clans. In 1206 A.D., Temujin was successful and took the name Genghis Khan, meaning "universal leader." Over the next 20 years, the Mongols conquered much of Central Asia and Northern China

  • Kublai Khan attempted to consolidate his power and make the government more centralized. By the time of his death, however, the empire had fractured into four regions, known as Khanates, each ruled by a khan. These areas were, in theory, ruled by the Great Khan, but there was little power in the central government

  • Mongol armies were more organized than most empires and kingdoms of the time. A chain of command divided warriors into small groups under separate generals, but the groups could combine to form larger armies. The warriors trained to fight together in these groups, instead of training to fight as individuals

  • Mongols were experts at sieges, the process of surrounding and capturing well-defended cities. They made catapults and other weapons that could damage city walls. The Mongol armies dammed rivers during sieges, sending water away from a city to deny its citizens water, or to create a land path to attack through

  • During the 13th century, the Mongols conquered the Kievan Rus' and ruled them for two centuries. This caused the Kievan Rus' to become isolated from European civilization. The Mongols also invaded Korea (Goryeo) in a series of campaigns during the mid-1200s. The Mongol Yuan Dynasty ruled Korea for 80 years.

  • The Roman Republic existed from 509 B.C. to 27 B.C. The senate decided a republic would be a good form of government because the king that had ruled them was a tyrant. The Roman Constitution was based on 12 written laws and ancient traditions. Governmental power in the Roman Republic was divided among three branches as a system of checks and balances: the senate, the legislative assemblies, and the executive magistrates

  •  Many of the elements of the government of the Roman Republic are still used by democratic governments. Some of those elements include checks and balances, the separation of powers, vetoes, filibusters, term limits, impeachments, and regularly scheduled elections. Civil law, which is based upon ancient Roman law, is used in many European and Latin American countries. Civil law is based on written rules.

  •  Civic duty was an important part of life for Roman citizens. Serving as a judge when asked to hear a legal case was an example of the moral obligations of all Roman citizens during the Republic

  • The patricians and the plebeians were two groups of citizens who had the right to vote in the Roman Republic. The patricians were the elite class, and membership in this class was solely based on the family in which a person was born. The plebeians were the non-elite class and included landowners, merchants, and shopkeepers
