First Conditional

Unless

• USE:

  • To express that something happens or not if the condition DOESN'T happen. We use UNLESS instead of IF.

  • Unless = if not

  • It can be used in the zero and first conditionals. You can also find it in the second conditional, but never in the third conditional.

  • Unless + subject + present simple, subject + present simple.

    • Unless I get up early, I don’t arrive at work on time: a no ser que me levante temprano, no llego al trabajo a tiempo. 

  • Unless + subject + present simple, subject + will + infinitive

    • Unless it rains, I won’t take my umbrella: a no ser que llueva, no me llevaré mi paraguas.

Time clauses

• USE:

  • If they are referred to the future, they are formed as the first conditional (present simple, will).

  • If they are referred to general truths and facts, they are formed as zero conditional.

• ​We change the conjunctions: instead of if or unless, we use:

  • By the time (para cuando)

  • ​When (cuando)

  • As soon as (tan pronto como, en cuanto)

  • After (depués de (que))

  • The moment (that) (en cuanto)

  • Before (antes de (que))

  • Once (una vez que, en cuanto)
