Function Notation
Objective: Evaluate functions written in function notation.
2
Fill in the Blank
Given: y is three times as big as x.
If x = 8 the y = ?
3
VOCABULARY
Relation: a set of input and output values, usually represented in ordered pairs.
Like (3,-2).
(simply a relationship between two numbers)
Example: 'y is twice as big as x'
So if x = 3, then y = 6
(That is the relationship between the two numbers)
4
VOCABULARY
Function: is a specific kind of relation where every input has exactly one output.
5
EXAMPLE
Both tables are relations.
BUT...
One table is a function.
One table is NOT a function.
Do you see which is NOT a function?
6
Multiple Select
Which tables represent functions?
7
VOCABULARY
Function Notation: a specific way to write a relation when it is a function. When you see a relation written in function notation you know right away that it is a function.
General Function Notation: f(x)
Said out loud: "f of x"
Example: y = 3x + 2 is a relation.
It is ALSO a function.
So it can be written as f(x) = 3x + 2
8
Multiple Choice
Given y = 2x + 1, find the value of y when x = 5

Evaluating Functions
y = 2x - 1 is a function.
So it can be written in function notation.
f(x) = 2x - 1
The questions we answered
Given y = 2x - 1, find the value of y when x = 5.
Can be asked this way
Given f(x) = 2x - 1, find f(5).
10
EXAMPLE
Given f(x) = 4x - 9, find f(2)
11
Multiple Choice
Given f(x) = -3x + 5, find f(2).
f(2) = -1
f(2) = -11
f(2) = 11
f(2) = 1
12
Fill in the Blank
Given f(x) = -5x - 15, find f(4).
13
EXAMPLE
Given f(x) = -x - 7, find f(-3)
14
Fill in the Blank
Given f(x) = -x + 12, find f(-2).
15
Fill in the Blank
Given f(x) = -x + 6x + 8, find f(-6).
16
EXAMPLE
Given f(x) = x2 - 2x + 10, find f(-3)
17
Fill in the Blank
Given f(x) = x2 + 3x + 1, find f(-4).
