Figurative Language: What is itś Purpose?
Figurative language uses figures of speech to be more effective, persuasive, and impactful. This literary device forces the readers to imagine what a writer wants to express.

Types of Figurative Languages: 1. Simile: A comparison of two dissimilar objects using the words ´like´ or ´as.´
2. Metaphor: A comparison of two dissimilar objects without using ´like´ or ´as.´
A. Example of a Simile: This poem is like a ´punch in the gut.´ (The poem is being explicitly compared to a ´punch in the gut´ using the word ´like.´
B. Example of a Metaphor: ´Time is money.´(The statement compares time and money, and it does not literally mean that the amount of time you have equals the money that you have. Instead, it means that time is a valuable resource.)
