Verbs - глаголы.
Irregular and regular verbs
Regular past tense verbs are easy to form – you add “ed” to the end of the verb (e.g. I play guitar –> I played guitar). Irregular verbs however, are not formed so simply and have no consistent form. Therefore, theirpast tense forms have to be learned.
3
To form the past tense of a verb, add -ed to the end of the root form of the verb.
jump becomes jumped and talk becomes talked
If the verb ends in -e, just add a -d to the end of the root form.
examine becomes examined and dance becomes danced.
If the verb ends in -y, we turn the -y into an -i and add -ed.
cry becomes cried and fry becomes fried.
If a one-syllable verb ends in consonant-vowel-consonant (согласная-гласная-согласная), we double the final consonant. If the verb ends in -w, -x, or -y, we don’t double the consonant.
stun becomes stunned and drum becomes drummed.
skew becomes skewed, box becomes boxed, and stay becomes stayed.
If the last syllable of a longer verb is stressed and ends in consonant-vowel-consonant, we double the final consonant. If the last syllable isn’t stressed, then we don’t double the final consonant.
refer becomes referred and input becomes inputted.
shovel becomes shoveled and awaken becomes awakened.
-d/ed end
Rules to form regular verbs
Some regular verbs use a –t variant, and they end in -t in the past tense rather than -ed or -d.
dream becomes dreamt and leap becomes leapt.
Sometimes, -t variant verbs also change their spelling a little bit:
send becomes sent and creep becomes crept.
Be careful of -t variant verbs, because not all verbs that end in -t in the past tense are regular verbs. For example, the verb catch is NOT a regular verb even though its past tense form caught ends in a -t.

The first column is the infinitive. The infinitive is distinguished by "To" like "To buy" or "To dive".
The second column corresponds to the preterite of the verb. It is when the action took place in the past tense and is finished.
The third column corresponds to the past participle of the verb. It is when the action is finished, but still has a connection with the present tense.
