Democracy means rule by the people.
The word comes from the ancient Greek words ‘demos’ (the people) and ‘kratos’ (to rule).
A democratic country has a system of government in which the people have the power to participate in decision-making
3
Each democracy is unique and works in different ways. In some democracies citizens help make decisions directly by voting on laws and policy proposals (direct or participatory democracy). In others, citizens choose representatives to make decisions on their behalf (indirect or representative democracy).

For instance, if you are a student and vote in student government elections, you practice a form of indirect democracy.
You do not make decisions about the school directly, but through your elected representatives.
On the other hand, imagine having a school class meeting, in which all students vote on where to go on a school trip, with several options possible. That would be an example of direct democracy at work.
