What are norms? (not normal)
25
26
Norms are:
A standard or a principle of right action binding upon the members of a group and serving to guide, control, or regulate proper and acceptable behavior. It governs conduct in a social situation – like this class and in group settings. Example: Be engaged, don’t speak out (wait your turn – share air time), assume good intent.
27
Why do we need norms?
To help control the chaos – I want to hear what you each have to say and I want you to be able to hear me and each other. I will listen to you with an open mind and I want you to do the same. We all have opinions and ideas and want to be heard – I want you to speak your truth and listen to other’s with an open mind and respect. In this class there will be lots of activities and discussions.
28
Some examples of norms:
· Be comfortable with discomfort (don’t be afraid to discuss and share)
· Be engaged
· Expect & Accept non-closure (sometimes not all questions can be answered right away)
What do you notice about these norms?
