Reading Strategies : Skimming and Scanning

The key to full appreciation and understanding of what we read is the ability to make use of certain reading strategies.  These strategies facilitate and act as scaffolds in effectively analyzing literature.

​SKIMMING	​SCANNING
​-quick reading of text to get the main idea	​
​- reading important parts only that you need from the material	​ a. underline important information while reading a text (dates, numbers, names) b. when reading a question, identify the key words and scan the text
​- Used in the following: a. reading long chapters b. doing research on a long article HOW TO SKIM: a. look at the first paragraph and focus on the first and 2nd sentences to get the main idea b. drop down next on the last part to get important information like DATES and NUMBERS c. skip next to the last paragraph for a summary	​HOW TO SCAN : Underline important information as you read (number, date, names, etc.) Identify key words and scan the text for it
