Tips for part I of the test- Photographs

In Part 1 of the Listening test, you will hear several different statement types that describe the photos you see, including statements about activities, condition, or location.

Some statements in Part 1 describe an activity in the photo.

These statements often use the present continuous tense:

be + verb + -ing.

Sample statements about activities:

» They’re shaking hands.

» He’s reading the menu.

» The doctor is talking with the patient.

» She’s buying a train ticket.

TASK Look at the photos. Think of verbs that describe the activity you see. Then choose a verb tocomplete each statement so that it correctly describes the photo.

​Similar sounding words

In Part 1 of the Listening test, a distractor may use a word that sounds like, but is not exactly the same as, a word that would correctly describe the photo. These distracters are often words that rhyme or contain some similar sounds.

Task

Look at the photo and read the four statements. Identify the words in the statements that sound similar to things that are in the picture. Then choose the statement that best describes the picture.
