When are traditional tests better to use than PBAs?
3
1) When assessing basic levels of student knowledge of a topic or mastery of a content area, traditional tests provide a timely way to do so. Also, in early stages of learning, students simply do not have a depth of understanding. So, while he or she may be able to shoot according to the proper cues on a skills test, he or she cannot in a modified game.
2) If teachers want documentation that students have learned a set of rules or understand basic safety concerns
3) When teaching large classes, teachers can gain information about whether students have learned basic concepts

"1. Explain what is meant by a person-to-person defense, a zone defense, and when each is most appropriately used."
Is this an open-response question? Why or why not.
7
This is NOT an open-response question. This is an essay question. Open-response questions:
1)allow for a variety of solutions with no answer being more correct than another. This question is looking for specific answers.
2) have a real world context (Example: You are about to play in the regional finals of a basketball tournament. You know that your opponent has two outstanding guards who score most of the points, whereas the other three players usually take a combined total of fewer than 10 shots per game. Describe a potential way to defend this team and give reasons for your choice.)
3) encourage higher-order thinking skills. Students must analyze the abilities of their own team to develop a proper strategy.
Essay questions measure what students know. Open-response questions measure both what students know and what they can do with that knowledge.
