We use there is with singular nouns and there are with plural nouns.

There aren't any apples.

There is + singular nouns.
(countable nouns and non-countable nouns)
Countable nouns are those noun you can count (1, 2, 3...).
E.g. There is a chair. (= 1 chair)
Non-countable noun are those nouns that cannot be counted. They do not have a plural form: There is a lot of traffic here!
