Linear Functions
For this unit, you need to be able to:
_ find slope given a table, equation, or graph.
In the next few slides, you will revisit these skills to prepare you for this unit.
2
describes the direction and steepness of a line.
Slope:
3
In general , slope is the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change.
We often think of this as "rise over run" or "change in y over change in x"
y2-y1
x2-x1
*if a slope doesn't simplify to a whole number, we leave it as a fraction! This is so we can easily identify the relationship! (the rise AND the run)
4
Table
You can also use two points to find slope, simply by finding the change in y-values and x-values, respectively. Finding the slope is even easier if the points are presented as a graph. We can identify the two points and count the rise/run units
Graph
The equation of a line can be written in different forms. The equation shown above is slope-intercept form. This equation is written in terms of y, the coefficient of x is the slope (denoted by m) and the constant (denoted by b) is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis.
