Prisms
We've learned how to find volume for two different shapes...
Some text here about the topic of discussion
3
The formulas are different....
but the steps are the same!
Choose the correct volume formula (V = Bh or V = 1/3 Bh)
Shade the base. Remember: the shape is named after the base!
Ex: a triangular pyramid has a triangular base.
Find the area of the base (B)
Find the height of the whole shape (h)
Fill in the volume formula
Multiply!
4
Multiple Choice
Let's try a triangular prism.
Which formula should we use to find the volume?
V = Bh
V = 1/3 Bh
5
Multiple Choice
Since it is a triangular prism, we should use V = Bh.
Before we find "B," let's identify the base.
Which shape is the base?
The rectangle on the bottom
The triangles on the side
6
Multiple Choice
Since it is a triangular prism, the base is the triangle.
Now lets calculate "B" - the area of the base.
What is "B"?
4 cm
6 sq cm
12 sq cm
44 sq cm
7
Multiple Choice
B, the area of the base, is 6 sq cm.
Notice how it's filled into the formula. Now we just need to fill in the height of the prism.
What is the h?
Hint: what is the distance between the 2 bases?
3 cm
4 cm
11 cm
8
Multiple Choice
B = 6, h = 11
so V = (6) (11)
Multiply to find the final answer.
What is the volume of the prism?
66 cubic cm
44 cubic cm
611 cubic cm
22 cubic cm
9
Multiple Choice
Now try this prism on your own!
Find the volume of the rectangular prism.
280 in3
140 in3
35 in3
330 in3
10
The correct volume was 280 cubic cm.
11
Multiple Choice
Now let's try a pyramid together!
Which formula should we use to find the volume of the rectangular pyramid?
V=Bh
V=31Bh
12
Multiple Choice
Since it is a rectangular pyramid, we should use V=31Bh .
Now let's find the area of the base (B).
What is B?
8 ft
12 ft
48 sq ft
24 sq ft
13
Multiple Choice
The area of the base (B) is 48 sq ft.
Which formula shows the whole volume formula filled in correctly?
V=31(48)
V = (8)6
V=31(48)12
V=(48)12
14
Multiple Choice
Now that we've filled in the formula, calculate the final answer.
What is the volume of the rectangular pyramid?
192 cubic ft
576 cubic ft
288 cubic ft
96 cubic ft
15
The correct volume was 192 cubic cm.
Remember...
You can divide by 3 first to make the calculation easier!
16
Multiple Choice
Now try this pyramid on your own.
What is the volume of the triangular pyramid?
40 ft3
240 ft3
80 ft3
120 ft3
17
The correct volume was 40 cubic feet.
Since the base was a triangle, you had to find 1/2 when you found B.
Since it's a pyramid, you also had to find 1/3 at some point.
18
Now you will see prisms and pyramids. Make sure to use all the steps we practiced!
Mixed Practice
19
Multiple Choice
What is the volume of the triangular prism?
20
The correct volume was 560 cubic cm.
Did you remember to 1/2 the triangle?
Did you use 10 as the height of the prism?
21
Multiple Choice
What is the volume of the rectangular pyramid?
22
The correct volume was 72 cubic ft.
Your paper should show these steps every time!
23
Multiple Choice
80 cubic cm
84 cubic cm
12 cubic cm
43 cubic cm
