Searching the Internet for Quality Sources
The development of the essay should come from your own critical thinking as well as 1-2 credible sources (no more than 2). At least one source should be obtained from the TCTC or Clemson library databases/print material obtained from the library. The other may come from outside the databases, but must meet the guidelines for source credibility:
· Timeliness
· Relevance to topic
· Sufficient author credentials/expertise
· Objective/fair approach to the topic and/or clear acknowledgment of bias
· Verifiable support for claims
3
Searching Library Databases
There are five main types of library databases useful for our class:
General: All subject-areas in one place
Subject-Specific: think psychology or history-specific angles on topics/events
News/Current Events: can offer a timeline of development on a topic, address a topic in real time.
eBook: Lengthier, more detailed studies of a topic
Data: polls of public opinion, statistics

Starting the Comparison Essay (750-1000 words)
For this assignment, you will use the comparison/contrast strategy to persuade an audience that one course of action is better than the other. A course of action should be something that has weight and high stakes—for example, a low stakes decision would be the type of toothpaste one should buy or whether they should use Spotify or Apple music…but what kinds of decisions have more impact on us, either short or long term? Writing this essay will help you understand how to establish common ground and conduct a fair comparison by developing a set of criteria on which to base your evaluation and decision. You will also gain knowledge as to how this writing strategy functions as a form of problem-solving in and outside of the classroom setting.
5
Revise Using the Reverse Outline Strategy
1. Consult Ch. 8: Use effective revision techniques (Graphic Organizer 8.2)
2. Create a reverse outline (graphic organizer) with your group; keep in mind that in the "Details to Add" section, these can be specific types of evidence, suggestions for explaining/giving more detailed reasoning for a point, suggestions for incorporation of research, etc. "Other problems" can refer to major grammar errors, word choice/sentence struture, etc.
3. Create your outline in a doc or on paper so that it can be shared with another group for comparison.
6
Review and Reflect on Instructor Feedback
1. Make observations about the structure of the feedback.
2.How does this feedback compare to past feedback you have received on writing assignments?
3. If this were your feedback, would you understand how to apply it and make connections in future assignments? Why/why not?
