Tables
Tables are a way to present data with all the information that has been discovered through experiments. Tables tell you what you are testing and what you are measuring. There are many constants in a table.
Look at this table. The table tells you what they are testing - The Most Popular Pizza ( IV). The number of votes for each flavor (DV) is the results of their experiment.
You need to be able to answers questions about the table by reading the information given.
2
Variables in an experiment
Independent Variable
The independent variable or IV is the variable that you are testing. The variable you are wanting to see that works in solving your problem or answering your question. You are in control of what you are testing.
Example: Stain remover for ketchup, material for baseball glove, fabric that keeps you dry better.
3
Dependent Variable
The dependent variable or DV is the results you get after you have completed your experiment. This is the answer or what you are measuring to see if it worked.
Example: The amount of stain left in the clothes after the stain remover was applied before washing.
4
Constant
Constants are variable that are the same when you are testing something or not. There are generally many of them.
Example: The type of material stain was made on, the type of soap used in the washer, the amount of washing soap, the time spent washing, the type of stain, the time the stain sat on the material before washing.
5
Control
This part of the experiment is used to compare what you are testing. It does not get any of the items you are testing to see if they work, it just follows the steps of the test without the IV.
Example: The stain is made on the same type of material, sat on the clothes the same time, washed with the same type of soap, water in the machine is the same temperature. How this turns out compared to your tested item will determine if you problem is solved or question is answered.
6
Steps of Scientific Method
Asking a question or trying to find the solution to a problem is the first step in the scientific method.
The hypothesis which is a predicted guess of what you are testing and the outcome you are wanting is next. This can be modified if at the end of you experiment your outcome does not support what you stated in the hypothesis.
Doing research on the topic of interest, learning background knowledge of it and different parts of the variable you are testing will help you when you are completing the experiment and coming to your conclusion.
7
Steps of Scientific Method
Creating an experiment to follow through seeing if the item you want to test really works is very important. Each step in the testing process is important to follow and keep accurate data so if anyone else wants to do your same test they can replicate it and get the same results you did.
Once the experiment is finished then you can look at all of your data collected and make the decision if what you stated in your hypothesis was correct. If it was then you can repeat the experiment several times to make sure you get the same results. If the results were not what you expected, then you can modify your hypothesis and test something different.
