Identify character archetypes.

Character Archetypes are types of characters reused in many stories 1.2.1 page 1
Mysterious Stranger-- represents the unknown. May be good or bad, keeping the other characters and the audience guessing about his or her motives.
Wise Elder-- represents knowledge. Someone the other characters respect and seek out for advice.

Funny Sidekick-- Supports the hero and creates comic relief. Might even make the hero a better person. Sometimes, the sidekick is the REAL hero.
Fairy godparent -- Represents caregiving. Because the fairy godparent's magic can make anything possible, the main characters benefit from his or her care.

Dialogue, setting and response to conflict are tools an author uses to make characters more interesting and realistic. All of these things lead to character development.

External conflict comes from an outside force such as another character, nature or society.

You can choose a novel that inspired a movie you've already seen or one that you haven't seen yet. Just be sure you can finish the novel and watch the movie by the time you get to the informational essay later in the course. There you'll compare the novel and the movie.
