CHAPTER 5 SBI IN THE CLASSROOM

There are 2 task systems. They are Managerial and Instructional. Which task system is more important? Why?
3
One is not more essential than the other. It is important that they work together for effective teaching to occur. You cannot teach if students are not paying attention or if they are disruptive. Instructional time is not maximized without a proper classroom management system in place.

Students tend to learn best when they are comfortable. Why might there be a higher percentage of students who DO NOT feel comfortable in Phys Ed class compared to other subject areas? How will you use this information to be a more effective teacher?
5
All students won’t be comfortable in Phys Ed class because they are less skilled than others and most of the learning is visible to others. Compare that to a math class where students may not understand how to perform a particular function. No one else can see their paper and they can make believe like they are in mid-thought or trying to work it out. Phys Ed can be traumatic for some students. It may be difficult for some, but you need to gain and/or express empathy. Basically, you need to have a conversation with those students explaining how you empathize with their reluctance to perform in front of others but that they need to demonstrate satisfaction of the necessary criteria in order to earn their grade. This will also very likely lead to less frustration on the teacher’s part because you have communicated with those students that you understand their position, that they still have a responsibility as a student to earn their grade, and that they must make a choice. You still actively encourage them throughout the process.

Goethe, “If you treat an individual as he is, he will stay as he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he could and ought to be, he will become what he ought to be.” How does this quote relate to teacher expectations and student motivation?
7
Students are perceptive and know when teachers value what they say or do. They notice when you speak to other students and then roll your eyes when they walk away. They know who cares and who are fakes. Teachers who inspire their students to be what they ought to be are highly effective teachers. If teachers expect little of their students, they will have little reason to learn.

What is meant by, “A good class climate can minimize comparisons and encourage all students to learn?”
9
It means that the teachers don’t compare students with each other. When teachers compare students, those students tend to develop an Ego Orientation (they want to prove or hide a lack of ability). Students are less likely to compare themselves with others when they are engaged in meaningful tasks. They are more likely to be concerned with their own performance. They are also less likely to compare themselves when they feel that they are progressing toward meeting satisfactory criteria of the skill.

How can we empower students to be motivated to learn and perform?
13
Students must experience success in Physical Education to feel compelled to participate. Teachers must create a climate for accepting mistakes and helping one another in the learning process.
Creating activities with skill progressions that present difficult and challenging material in small, digestible steps (Ex: Dribble Kncokout – Protection Dribble practice, 1 v 1, Group of 4, Group of 8, everyone. Or use Dribble with Fingers example).
Help students set goals for learning. Teach them how to write SMART goals. This helps students focus on their target and determine if they are moving toward their goal or not.
14
Students need to feel like they belong. You can do team building challenges at the beginning of the year. Community Building is a unit in Elementary PE.
Students succeed in environments where they feel useful. Students enjoy helping one another and enjoy helping teachers. When teachers assign roles to students in class (distributing equipment, leading exercises, officiating) students feel like they are needed for class success.
