Genitive Case: what we know?

  • Form is the second listed in a noun's dictionary entry.

    • ex: ager, agrī, m.​

  • Form is where the stem of the noun is found.

  • The singular ending identifies a noun's declension.​

​Genitive Case: what does it mean?

  • A "modifying" case

    • i.​e. Providing descriptive information about another noun/pronoun.

  • Major job: possession.

    • ​The Gen. deals with concepts where English uses "of."

  • In Latin:

    • usually the Gen. format word follows the word its modifying.

    • Endings: -ae, -ārum, -ī, -ōrum

    • I am the father of Aescinus.

    • I am Aescinus' father.​

  • In casā pīratārum coquō.

    • I cook in the house of the pirates.

    • I cook in the pirates' house.

  • Pepo est amīcus Melissae.

    • Pepo is the friend of Melissa.

    • Pepo is Melissa's friend.​
