An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

An adverb tells where, when, how, or to what extent (how much, how often, and how long.

​This type of plant is found to be extremely dangerous. (The adverb extremely modifies the adjective dangerous; telling to what extent)

​William is quite creative with his skills.

(The adverb quite modifies the adjective creative; telling to what extent)

Kyler was an exceptionally private person.

(The adverb exceptionally modifies the adjective private; telling to what extent)

Adverbs may modify adjectives.

​Examples:​

Jerry spoke formally with his boss.

(The adverb formally modifies the verb spoke; telling how)

Have heard this song before?

(The adverb before modifies the verb phrase have heard; telling when)

They searched everywhere.

(The adverb everywhere modifies the verb searched; telling where)

He had not read the text carefully.

(The adverb carefully modifies the verb read; telling to what extent)

Adverbs may modify verbs.

Adverbs may modify other adverbs:

Jackie runs remarkably fast when she is hungry.

(remarkably is an adverb that modifies the adverb fast; telling to what extent)

It is too soon to know the results.

(too is an adverb that modifies the adverb soon; telling to what extent)

Example:

My parents left yesterday.

(yesterday is used as an adverb telling when the parents left)

They will return home Saturday.

(home is used as an adverb to tell where they will return and Saturday is used as an adverb to tell when they will return.) ​

Some words that are often used as nouns may also be used as adverbs.
