At the turn of the century, people around the world heard about the job opportunities in America. Most immigrants came from Europe. Some also came from Asia. All immigrants had to through immigration stations: Ellis Island & Angel Island. They hoped for a better life for their families.

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was meant to prevent most Chinese immigrants from entering the country. However, many Chinese immigrants continues to come to California.
Between 1910 and 1940, Chinese immigrants were stopped at Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. They stayed there until immigration officials decided whether they could enter the US.
Chinese immigrants were allowed to enter if they had an immediate family member who was already a US citizen.

Every immigrant was examined by a doctor. Doctors checked for sickness or illness, dental, vision and more. Good health indicated that he/she was able to work and earn a living. Those that were rejected were sent back to their homelands.

Immigrants were mostly poor and settled near areas where they came in to. These areas also had jobs where they worked. Immigrants created cultural neighborhoods.

These neighborhoods encouraged immigrants from the same country, language, food, and customs to dwell together. Places like, "Chinatown" or "Little Italy" still exist today in major cities.
