Today we will be refreshing how to use three tenses in German - past, present and future. We have studied all three tenses before, and if you can use them all in your summative, you will be more likely to hit the highest grades.

You read a text in the previous activity which had examples of the three tenses. Let's have a look at them in more detail now.​

The past

Here are some examples:

Ich war faul. (I was lazy). Wir waren laut. (We were loud).

Ich fand mein Zimmer schrecklich. (I found my house terrible).

Wir fanden die Wohnung toll. (We found the flat great).

Ich wohnte in London. (I lived in London). Wir wohnten in London. (We lived in London).

Ich hatte eine Katze. (I had a cat). Wir hatten eine Katze. (We had a cat).

Sie hieß​ Oskar. (She was called Oscar).

The future

To form the future, you need three parts:

Ich werde in einer Stadt wohnen (I will live in a town/city).

sie wird Deutsch lernen (she will learn German).​

Wir werden eine Katze haben (we will have a cat).

First: subject (ich, sie, wir, etc)​

Second: form of werden (will), must agree with the subject

Third: main verb (ending in 'en') at the end)
