Objectives

At the end of the student-teacher interaction, the students are expected to:

  • define Nursing Conceptual Models

  • identify and explain at least one nursing conceptual model

  • develop a personal definition of nursing using concepts and theories learned

8

Nursing Conceptual Models

  • structures that provide nurses with a perspective of the patient and the professional practice.

  • structures that relate concepts together in a meaningful way.

10

Science of Unitary Human Beings

media

Martha Rogers

12 May 1914 - 13 March 1994

11

Science of Unitary Human Beings

  • Nursing

    • both a science and an art

    • provides a way to view the unitary human being who is integral with the universe.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

12

Science of Unitary Human Beings

  • The unitary human being and his/her environment are one.

  • Nursing focuses on people and the manifestations that emerge from the mutual human-environment field process.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

13

Science of Unitary Human Beings

  • Two dimensions

    • Science of Nursing - the knowledge specific to the field of nursing that comes from scientific research

    • Art of Nursing - involves using the science of nursing creatively to help better the life of the patient.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

14

Science of Unitary Human Beings

  • The model addresses the importance of the environment as an integral part of the patient, and uses that knowledge to help nurses blend the science and art of nursing to ensure patients have a smooth recovery and can get back to the best health possible.

15

Self Care Deficit Model

media

Dorothea Orem

15 July 1914 - 22 July 2007

16

Self Care Deficit Model

  • Nursing

    • The act of assisting others in the provision and management of self-care to maintain or improve human functioning at home level of effectiveness.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

17

Self Care Deficit Model

  • Focus: each individual's ability to perform self-care, defined as "the practice of activities that individuals initiate and perform on their own behalf in maintaining life, health, and well-being".

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

18

Self Care Deficit Model

  • Three interrelated theories:

    • the theory of self-care

    • the self-care deficit theory

    • the theory of nursing systems

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

19

Goal Attainment Theory

media

Imogene King

30 January 1923 - 24 December 2007

20

Goal Attainment Theory

  • Nursing

    • a process of action, reaction, and interaction whereby the nurse and client share information about their perception in the nursing situation

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

21

Goal Attainment Theory

  • Nursing

    • a process of human interactions between nurse and client whereby each perceives the other and the situation, and through communication, they set goals, explore means, and agree on means to achieve goals.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

22

Goal Attainment Theory

  • Goal of the nurse:

    • help individuals to maintain their health so they can function in their roles.

  • Domain of the nurse:

    • promoting, maintaining, and restoring health, and caring for the sick, injured and dying.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

23

Neuman Systems Model

media

Betty Neuman

11 September 1924

24

Neuman Systems Model

  • Nursing

    • (primary concern) to define the appropriate action in situations that are stress-related or in relation to possible reactions of the client or client system to stressors.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

25

Neuman Systems Model

  • presents a broad, holistic, and system-based method to nursing that maintains a factor of flexibility.

  • based on the person's relationship to stress, the response to it, and reconstitution factors that are progressive in nature

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

26

Neuman Systems Model

  • views the client as an open system that responds to stressors in the environment.

  • each client system is unique, a composite of factors and characteristics within a given range of responses.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

27

Adaptation Model

media

Sr. Callista Roy

14 October 1939

28

Adaptation Model

  • Nursing

    • [The goal of nursing is] the promotion of adaptation for individuals and groups in each of the four adaptive modes, thus contributing to health, quality of life, and dying with dignity.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

29

Adaptation Model

  • Sees the individual as a set of interrelated systems who strives to maintain a balance between various stimuli.

    • Nurses are facilitators of adaptation

      • promote positive adaptation by enhancing environment interactions and helping patients react positively to stimuli

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

30

Adaptation Model

  • Four Adaptive Modes

    • Physiological-Physical Mode

    • Self-Concept Group Identity Mode

    • Role Function Mode

    • Interdependence Mode

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

31

Behavioral System Model

media

Dorothy Johnson

21 August 1919 - 04 February 1999

32

Behavioral System Model

  • Nursing

    • an external regulatory force which acts to preserve the organization and integration of the patient's behavior at an optimal level under those conditions in which the behavior constitutes a threat to physical or social health, or in which illness is found.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

33

Behavioral System Model

  • each individual has patterned, purposeful, repetitive ways of acting that comprises a behavioral system specific to that individual.

  • advocates the fostering of efficient and effective behavioral functioning in the patient to prevent illness.

NCM 100 | Theoretical Foundations in Nursing | Nursing Conceptual Models

34

Behavioral System Model

  • Patient is defined as a behavioral system composed of seven (7) behavioral subsystems:

    • affiliative

    • dependency

    • ingestive

    • eliminative

    • sexual

    • aggressive

    • achievement
