Netflix
Netflix is the leading movie and TV show entertainment streaming provider. They have a huge array of films and TV shows to pick from and although most people may think that this is the success of their business, in reality, the cause and the main contributor can be credited to their impressive data science and recommendation engines, which they use to recommend films on their platform and attract thousands of new subscribers a day. They use data collected from the preferences of their users to push films and TV shows that subscribers might like based on what they’ve been watching and enjoying. They also use this data to fund and finance movies from their production company. The advantage in this scenario is Netflix has a platform on which they can push movies and TV shows to the end consumer who will most likely appreciate the content and therefore can attract a wider audience and consumer base. A disadvantage would be the question of ethics in spying and collecting data from a consumer who doesn’t know better.

Case Study of Data mining
A very high-profile case involving data mining was the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal. The whole case involved the way companies collect, use, and share people's data. The case occurred not because the companies involved necessarily broke the law, but because ethical issues were raised about their activities in collecting data. This occurred as there were no strict laws in place within the countries concerned that necessarily governed this practice.
The companies involved were accused thought of exploiting loopholes in the law to unethically mine data. The scandal revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy firm that mined data, had collected the personal data available from millions of people's Facebook profiles. They did this without the consent of Facebook users. This data was then analyzed and used for political advertising purposes.
The data was used to influence public opinion. As a result, on 25th May 2018, a new law was implemented to help govern the practice of data mining for EU residents.
This has meant that any companies wanting to gather the data of EU citizens must seek their permission to do so.
It details clear guidelines and definitions about how data can be collected and used. It also forces companies to consider questions such as 'Why am I with this data? and 'Do I have the user's consent to use this data?'. collecting this data? What do I intend to do with this data? and "Do I have the user's consent to use this data?
