Written language is one important feature of a civilization.​

• Early writing in Sumer used picture symbols or signs that were drawn on clay tablets.

• Picture symbols were gradually replaced with wedge shaped characters known as cuneiform.​

• Cuneiform means comes from the Latin words for "wedge-shaped".
