Written language is one important feature of a civilization.
Early writing in Sumer used picture symbols or signs that were drawn on clay tablets.
Picture symbols were gradually replaced with wedge shaped characters known as cuneiform.
Cuneiform means comes from the Latin words for "wedge-shaped".
