Borrow and lend

​'Lend' means to give something to someone to be used for a period of time and then returned.

'Borrow' means to take and use something that belongs to someone else for a period of time and then return it. The person lending something owns it and is letting someone else use it. The person borrowing something does not own it and will give it back when they are done using it.

Examples

Below are examples of how each word is used:

 

• May I borrow your pen? [=Will you lend me your pen?

• I borrowed his jacket because I forgot mine—I'll return it to him tomorrow.

• Mr. Smith let the students borrow his pens and pencils as long as they returned them before the end of the day.

• I can lend you this book [= You can borrow this book] if you want to read it.

• Lend your sister your car for the day; hers is at the mechanic.

• My grandmother is lending me her earrings for the wedding.
