The Monroe Doctrine:

Historical Context: 

Many countries in South America just gained their independence from European empires such as Spain and Portugal.

At the same time, Napoleon was defeated in Europe, The United States feared that European nations would once again try to establish power in the Americas.

The United States wanted to let Europe know that the United States would not allow the European kings to regain power in the Americas.

The Monroe Doctrine had a long lasting impact on the foreign policy of the United States. Presidents throughout history invoked the Monroe Doctrine when intervening in foreign affairs in the Western Hemisphere.

Some Examples of Monroe Doctrine

  • 1865 - The U.S. government helped to overthrow Mexican Emperor Maximilian I who was put in power by the French. He was replaced by President Benito Juarez.

  • 1962 - President John F. Kennedy invoked the Monroe Doctrine during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The U.S. placed a naval quarantine around Cuba which stopped the Soviet Union from installing missiles in Cuba.

  • 1982 - President Reagan invoked the Monroe Doctrine when he intervened in Nicaragua and El Salvador to fight communism. 

  • George Bush used the Monroe Doctrine when he invaded Panama to take down Manuel Noriega.

Theodore Roosevelt's addition to the Monroe Doctrine aka The Roosevelt Corollary

  • In his annual messages to Congress in 1904 and 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt expanded the Monroe Doctrine.

  • The corollary stated that not only were the nations of the Western Hemisphere not open to colonization by European powers, but that the United States had the responsibility to preserve order and protect life and property in those countries. 

  • In other words: If there were issues between Europe and any nation in the Western Hemisphere (the Americans/Caribbean etc) the USA had a duty to protect our neighbors -- even if they were a colony of a European Nation.
