11
Manufacturing
The Manufacturing sector has completely altered due to tech.
The way we design & develop parts for production are heavily computerised.
Using:
CAD - Computer Aided Design
CAM - Computer Aided Manufacturing
12
CAD System
CAD systems are used to create technical drawings. They can be used to produce plans and other design drawings for parts/products ready to be developed using CAM.
This CAD software allows for the designs to be viewed in detail and rotated in 3D to view the part/product from all angles.
13
CAM System
CAM systems control machinery, such as robotic arms, for manufacturing the objects that were designed using CAD.
This means the work is:
Consistent
Higher quality
More efficient
A CAM system developing a part/product is less intensive and quicker than manual labour.

18
Construction
Tech systems are used in planning, design and management of a development project as well as the actual construction of the building or structure.
Think: houses, factories, bridges, large buildings and other architecture.
Planning Projects
Creating Architectural Drawings
Tracking Spending
Create Simulations
19
Planning a Project
Project management software can be used to:
Creating a construction project schedule - details each development task
Assigning time to each task
Working out the order of tasks and assigning resources.
This will help the project run more smoothly and efficiently, as time is managed for effectively and the entire project laid out. This helps the project manager to keep within schedule and avoid running behind. schedule/missing deadlines.
20
Create Architectural Drawings
Technology systems can be used to develop architectural drawings and blueprints.
These designs of buildings/structures use CAD software to produce the drawings
Plotters are used for printing physical large copies of the designs.
21
Tracking Spending
Accounting software can be used to to manage money and track spending.
Every construction project has a budget. this software ensures that the project does not go over budget.
The automatic calculation of expenditure (spending) can also prevent mistakes being made due to human error.
22
Create simulations
Building simulations allows for the exploration 'what if' questions and scenarios without having to experiment on the system itself.
From concept design to operation (building life cycle)
Allows them to test out experiments without performing them in real life (new materials, funky shapes, new techniques etc)
They can test how elements of building design will perform under certain real world conditions - i.e. test structures against extreme weather conditions
23

What were the 4 tasks that are completed using tech systems in Construction?
24
Open Ended
What benefits are there to doing architectural drawings on technology systems, rather than completing them by hand?
25
Health
Your hospital, your GP & your pharmacy all make heavy use of technology systems to support the way they work and to ensure the best medical care is given.
Scanning
Monitoring
Storing digital data i.e. patient records
26
Scanning
X-ray
MRI
CAT scanners
These devices allow for the fast diagnosis of injuries and diseases without the need of surgery.
27
Monitoring
Temperature
Blood pressure
Heart rate sensors
Life support
There are examples of monitoring the health of a patient.
Monitor the recovery progresses and ensure patients don't deteriorate.
These allow for 24/7 monitoring and frees staff up to perform other duties.
28
Retail
The retail sector has seen a huge impact because of technology.
Shopping is quicker & easier. Customer has more choice and products & stores (online)
PoS / EPoS - Electronic Point of Sale
Produce sales reports
Online retail
29
EPoS
Electronic Point of Sale or Point of Sale
They allow for quick and accurate checkout for customers.
By using:
Barcode scanners
Electronic payment methods (e.g. credit card)
Automatic calculation of total bills.
This allows for faster transactions and less queuing time.
30
Produce sales reports
They can track sales
Produce reports and charts on sales & profits
Keep track of spending - expenditure
31
Online stores
A lot of shopping is now done online.
Some companies don't have physical stores (i.e. Amazon)
Pros:
Available 24/7
Convenient
Easy to find prices / compare prices
Easier & cheaper for businesses to advertise
Higher customer reach
[Online shopping also has its cons]
32
Open Ended
What is the negative impact of online shopping/stores? [4 marks]
33
Open Ended
Do you use online shopping? Why do you use it instead of going to the shops?
34
Finance
Tech systems to help with investment, banking and completing transactions.
Makes it more:
Accessible
Quicker
Reduce errors
Stock Monitoring
Interest Rate Calculation
Internet Banking
35
Stock Monitoring
Allows professionals to monitor the prices of
Stock market
Stocks & shares
Personal investment portfolio
They can monitor how good or bad their investments are doing.
Allows for quick thinking & informed decisions on when/where to move finances.
Computational & Critical thinking is a big player in the finance sector.
36
Interest Rate Calculation
Interest rates impacts both personal & business loans & savings. This can:
Increase what you owe (or decrease your interest)
Increase savings (or decrease your interest)
Technology systems can calculate how these interest rates will affect the consumer & business.
37
Internet Banking
Pros of internet banking:
Available 24/7
Convenient
Consumers can compare accounts & banks for best deals/offers
Reduces need to go into the bank for small tasks - transferring funds, paying bills, paying taxes and receiving pay.
Improved visibility - easier to keep track
Paperless
