5.02 & 5.04: Add/Subtract Fractions by Finding Common Denominators
2
Let's get started:
Take out your math notebook and label the new section "5.02/5.04 Adding & Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators"
Before we start, you are going to do some warm-up questions. You probably won't need to write these in your notebook!
After you warm-up, we will get going with the new lesson 🥸

In order to add and subtract fractions, the denominators MUST BE THE SAME! (or else you can't do it...yet!)

What's a denominator?
13
Ok - we are almost there!
You should be warmed up and ready to go with your fraction skills. You remember how to add & subtract fractions when the denominator is the same but WHAT ABOUT WHEN IT ISN'T?! 🥵
How do you add the fractions?
Good thing you already know how to make EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS (let's review that first...check out the next two slides)
14
Equivalent means "equal". Equivalent fractions take up the same amount of shaded space; they have the same area. Look at the figures to the right.
Notice that the shaded part of both circles covers the same amount. This means the fractions 1/2 and 2/4 are equal.
Equivalent Fractions
15
Let's find out how to do the "bottoms up" method!
Look at the image to the left.
Equivalent fractions have different numerators and denominators, but their value is the same
16
We are ready...Let's add/subtract fractions with unlike denominators!
Get ready to add the example problems from the lesson video on the next slide to your notes!
Click to the next slide and watch Math with Mr. J show you how to add fractions with unlike denominators! Be sure you write down all of his examples in your notes!
YOU GOT THIS! 💪🏽

So why do we need common denominators? 🤔
i mean - it makes sense right? But just in case it doesn't quite make sense yet...
Sit back and watch this video explanation
