​What is כופר?

Rashi:

​

ואין משלמין כופר. אם העידו בשור המועד שהרג את האדם והוזמו והיו מחייבין את הבעלים כופר דכתיב (שמות כא) אם כופר יושת עליו

Translation:​

שמות פרק כ"א​

וְכִֽי־יִגַּ֨ח שׁ֥וֹר אֶת־אִ֛ישׁ א֥וֹ אֶת־אִשָּׁ֖ה וָמֵ֑ת סָק֨וֹל יִסָּקֵ֜ל הַשּׁ֗וֹר וְלֹ֤א יֵאָכֵל֙ אֶת־בְּשָׂר֔וֹ וּבַ֥עַל הַשּׁ֖וֹר נָקִֽי׃

When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox shall be stoned and its flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner of the ox is not to be punished.

וְאִ֡ם שׁוֹר֩ נַגָּ֨ח ה֜וּא מִתְּמֹ֣ל שִׁלְשֹׁ֗ם וְהוּעַ֤ד בִּבְעָלָיו֙ וְלֹ֣א יִשְׁמְרֶ֔נּוּ וְהֵמִ֥ית אִ֖ישׁ א֣וֹ אִשָּׁ֑ה הַשּׁוֹר֙ יִסָּקֵ֔ל וְגַם־בְּעָלָ֖יו יוּמָֽת׃

If, however, that ox has been in the habit of goring, and its owner, though warned, has failed to guard it, and it kills a man or a woman—the ox shall be stoned and its owner, too, shall be put to death.

​אִם־כֹּ֖פֶר יוּשַׁ֣ת עָלָ֑יו וְנָתַן֙ פִּדְיֹ֣ן נַפְשׁ֔וֹ כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יוּשַׁ֖ת עָלָֽיו׃

If a payment is imposed, the owner must pay whatever is imposed to redeem the owner’s own life.

​קסברי כופרא כפרה והני לאו בני כפרה נינהו

The Tanna of this baraita holds​ that the purpose of the payment is ATONEMENT, and these witnesses are not in need of this atonement.

Rashi: ​

כופרא כפרה. לכפר על זה שהרג שורו את האדם והני לאו בני כפרה נינהו שלא הרג

שורם אדם ​

Kufra = Kapara/atonement - to atone for this guy whose ox gored a person. And these (edim zomimim) are not in need of this atonement, because their ox never gored a person​

​The Gemara then asks which Tanna is the view of כופרה=כפרה?

It answers that it is the view of R. Yishmael the son of R. Yochanan Ben Broka​

מאן תנא כופרא כפרה?

אמר רב חסדא: ר' ישמעאל בנו של ר' יוחנן בן ברוקה היא
