MATTER CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO THREE GROUPS
ELEMENTS
COMPOUNDS
MIXTURES
4
Elements
Simplest form of matter
Substance that cannot be broken down
All matter is composed of elements
Each element is made up of tiny particles called atoms
Arranged on The Periodic Table of Elements
An element's symbol will have ONE CAPITAL LETTER only and lower case letters and numbers if needed
Examples of Elements: Neon (Ne), Helium (He), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O2)
Diagrams --> will have the only one kind of symbol throughout
5
Compounds
Two or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED
Elements are found in specific ratios
Example: H2O is Water, but if you add another Hydrogen which would be H2O2 you get Hydrogen Peroxide!
Substances in a compound have completely NEW AND DIFFERENT properties than they have before they were chemically combined
Compounds CAN BE BROKEN DOWN using CHEMICAL MEANS
example: decomposition, electrolysis, chemical reactions
6
Compounds
Two or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED
Symbols for compounds will have TWO or More CAPITAL LETTERS with lower case letters and numbers if needed
Diagram -> two or more different dots will be touching and the pattern will be the same throughout
Examples of compouds: Salt(NaCl), Sugar (C12H22O12)
7
Mixtures
Two or more elements, compounds, or both that are PHYSICALLY combined
Substances are NOT found in specific ratios
Substances in a mixture keep their original properties
Examples: Air, Fruit Salad, Chex Mix
Diagrams --> Different symbols mixed together
