Anything that has mass and takes up space

Is everything

What is matter?

Fill in the Blank

3

MATTER CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO THREE GROUPS

  • ELEMENTS

  • COMPOUNDS

  • MIXTURES

4

Elements

Simplest form of matter

  • Substance that cannot be broken down

  • All matter is composed of elements

  • Each element is made up of tiny particles called atoms

  • Arranged on The Periodic Table of Elements

  • An element's symbol will have ONE CAPITAL LETTER only and lower case letters and numbers if needed

  • Examples of Elements: Neon (Ne), Helium (He), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O2)

  • Diagrams --> will have the only one kind of symbol throughout

5

Compounds

Two or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED

  • Elements are found in specific ratios

    • Example: H2O is Water, but if you add another Hydrogen which would be H2O2 you get Hydrogen Peroxide!

  • Substances in a compound have completely NEW AND DIFFERENT properties than they have before they were chemically combined

  • Compounds CAN BE BROKEN DOWN using CHEMICAL MEANS

    • example: decomposition, electrolysis, chemical reactions

6

Compounds

Two or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED

  • Symbols for compounds will have TWO or More CAPITAL LETTERS with lower case letters and numbers if needed

  • Diagram -> two or more different dots will be touching and the pattern will be the same throughout

Examples of compouds: Salt(NaCl), Sugar (C12H22O12)

7

Mixtures

  • Two or more elements, compounds, or both that are PHYSICALLY combined

  • Substances are NOT found in specific ratios

  • Substances in a mixture keep their original properties

  • Examples: Air, Fruit Salad, Chex Mix

  • Diagrams --> Different symbols mixed together
