Organ Transport Build Day 2 + CSA Recap
2
Standards Visited Today:
-6.PS3.1: Analyze the properties and compare the sources of kinetic, elastic potential, gravitational potential, electric potential, chemical, and thermal energy.
-6.PS3.2: Construct a scientific explanation of the transformation between potential and kinetic energy.
-6.PS3.3: Analyze and interpret data to show the relationship between kinetic energy and the mass of an object and its speed.
-6.PS3.4: Conduct an investigation to demonstrate the way that heat (thermal energy) moves among objects through radiation, conduction, or convection.
-6.ETS1.2: Design and test different solutions that impact energy transfer.
3
Yesterday, we:
-reviewed what we've learned that could impact our container design: energy transfer, lighter colors reflect and darker colors absorb heat (Albedo effect, multiple layers insulate (double-wall vs. single wall), insulators vs. conductors, conduction (direct contact), convection (heat transfer through a liquid or gas), radiation (heat transfer through empty space)
-made an individual blueprint of the container and justified the design features and materials needed
4
Today, we will:
-finish designing, build, and test your group's Organ Transport Container success of keeping the organ (ice cube) at temperature or having the least amount of temperature difference over 15 minutes
-review the most-missed questions on our CSA
-determine how successful we feel about the five standards in this unit (6.PS3.1-types of energy, 6.PS3.2-energy transformations, 6.PS3.3-KE calculations, 6.PS3.4-heat transfer, 6.ETS2.1-impact of energy)
5
Pause!
Let's design, shop, and build our Organ Transport containers!

CSA 1 Most-Missed Questions
The next few questions are the most-missed questions from the CSA. As you're answering the questions, see if you can also determine why they were most-missed!

Multiple Choice
6.PS3.1
5) As you are traveling, you listen to music with an iPhone, similar to the one shown. Which best describes the type of energy that powers this device?
chemical
sound
electrical
light

6.PS3.2
7) At the circus, a clown is juggling three bean bags. The bean bags move rapidly as they are thrown upward. Their motion slows as it reaches a maximum height, and then each bean bag falls back down. What causes the upward motion to become slower?
The kinetic energy is converted to wind energy.
The kinetic energy is converted to gravitational potential energy.
The gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy.
The gravitational potential energy is converted to light energy.

6.PS3.2
10) After a long, fun day, you are browsing social media and watching YouTube videos on your phone.
Select the energy transformation of your cell phone.
Electrical > chemical > light, sound, thermal
Chemical > electrical > light, sound, thermal
Thermal > electrical, light, sound
Chemical > nuclear, light, thermal

6.PS3.4
21) As you’re walking to the next ride, you notice a crayon on the dark asphalt walkway in bright sunlight. It has melted into a colorful puddle. What caused the crayon to melt?
Solar radiation heated the walkway and then heat transferred to the crayon by radiation.
Solar radiation heated the walkway and then heat transferred to the crayon by conduction.
Solar convection heated the walkway and then heat transferred to the crayon by radiation.
Solar convection heated the walkway and then heat transferred to the crayon by conduction.

6.PS3.4
24) As you’re walking past the food trucks, you notice a large pot of soup being stirred with a wooden spoon. Why is a wooden spoon the best choice to stir the hot soup?
Wood is a good conductor of heat and transfers energy to the spoon.
Wood is a good conductor of heat and does not allow the transfer of energy to the spoon.
Wood is a poor conductor of heat and transfers energy to the spoon.
Wood is a poor conductor of heat and does not allow the transfer of energy to the spoon.

6.PS3.2
8) A clown at the circus is riding a unicycle. The clown pushes down on the pedals and then stops. The energy the clown applied to the pedals
no longer exists.
was stored for future use.
became part of the bicycle.
was changed into other forms of energy.
13
Pause!
Let's see who's container was the best at keeping out the heat!

Match
Match the following:
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Albedo Effect
Insulator
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Albedo Effect

15
Open Ended
How was heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation, Albedo effect, conductors/insulators, etc.) related to your Organ Transport Build?
16
Open Ended
Answer the Exit Ticket/Unit Driving Question:
How can organs be preserved while transporting them quickly and safely?
17
Poll
Now that we have went over the most-missed questions on the CSA and completed the Organ Transport Build, how do you feel about energy (types of energy, KE calculations, energy transformations, impact of energy) and heat transfer?
Level 1: I am still struggling. Help!
Level 2: I am getting better, but I still need more practice.
Level 3: I am really starting to understand!
Level 4: I understand completely, and I could teach these topics to someone else.
