What are complex sentences?

A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.

For example:

  1. I waited for the bus, but it was late.

  2. Don't leave the concert until you finish enjoying it.

3

Okay, the most common question my students have been asking me is how to find the complex sentence, so here's a tip for easiness. A complex sentence combines a dependent clause with an independent clause. Which means that this sentence is formed with a dependent and independent clause. Like for example, Because the soup was too cold, I warmed it in the microwave. I hope you kids understood all!

How do we identify the complex sentence?

Test Yourself

Do and check it by yourself to see if you have understood.

  • Don't leave the restaurant until the dishes here are washed.

  • While playing football, the ball thrown by my friend hit the boy crossing the street.

  • Elissa was very sick today and we will take her to the hospital now, before she gets worse.
