Root
A basic word to which affixes (prefixes and suffixes) are added is called a root word because it forms the basis of a new word.

-ologist/-ology
The suffix -ology means "the study of [a particular subject]." The related suffix -ologist means "a person who [studies a certain subject]" or "an expert in [a particular area]."
Volcanology is the study of volcanoes. A volcanologist is an expert in volcanoes.
The study of insects is known as entomology. An entomologist is one who studies insects.
More examples: geology = the study of the earth, biologist = a person who studies living things, mythology = the study of a culture's myths & legends,
anthropologist = one who studies human culture, paleontologist = a person who studies fossils

Voc, voke
The bases voke and voc are from the Latin words vox and vocare meaning "voice" or "call."
If a bird can vocalize, it can make sounds like a voice.
A vocation is a profession that a person feels called to be a member of.
To convoke a meeting is to call people together to meet.
More examples: revoke = to call for the cancellation of a promise, evoke = to bring or call to one's mind

Im-, in-
The Latin prefixes im- and in- can mean "in", "on", or "into".
If goods or products are imported to a country, they are shipped into that country.
An immigrant is a person who is moving into another country to live for good.
An inspector is a person who inspects, or looks into, the details of an object or event.

Com-, col-
The Latin prefixes com- and col-, can mean "with" or "together".
When you compete, you play with someone as you try to reach a goal.
When you have a conversation, you are talking with someone.
When two objects collide, they crash together with force.
More examples: community - a place where people live and work together, combine - to put together, companion - a person or animal that you spend time with, collect - gather together, college - a place where students read and learn together, collaborate - to work together

The Latin prefix de- can mean "down", "off of", or "the reversal of".
A descending plane is going down.
A deflated balloon has had the air taken out of it.
To deodorize smelly socks means to remove the bad odor from them.
More examples: deduce - to use clues to figure out, decode - to translate a message out of secret code

Pro-
The Latin d prefix pro- can mean "forward", "for", "in favor of", "on behalf of", or "in front of".
To protest is to publicily put forward one's opinions about an issue.
If you are pro-oil, you are in favor of drilling for oil.
Progress is positive, forward change or movement towards a goal.
More examples: propel - to thrust forward with force, proceed - to continue forward

The bases audi and audit are from the Latin word audire and mean "hear" or "listen."
An auditorium is a place where people gather to listen to and watch a performance.
If something is inaudible, then you are not able to hear it.
