​Uses of the Preterit (INDEFINIDO)

Always keep in mind that the action or actions expressed by the preterit

are over. It doesn’t make any difference how long the action went on

before; the action has a definite end.

​

-To express an action completed in the past​.

(Anoche ella cantó una canción.)

​

-To express a series of completed actions in the past.

(Anoche en la fiesta cantamos, bailamos y comimos.)

​

-To express a condition that is no longer in effect.

(A Miguel le dolió el cuerpo ayer pero hoy se siente bien.)​

​

​Uses of the imperfect (IMPERFECTO)

Expresses an action or actions in the past that are not

seen as completed. The imperfect is used in the following ways.

​

• To “set the stage” in the past; to express a narration, situation, or

background in the past.

(El sol brillaba y los pájaros cantaban.)

​

• To express habitual, customary, or repeated actions in the past.

(Todos los veranos yo jugaba tenis con mis amigos.)

​

• To express continuous actions or actions in progress in the past.

(​Marisol cuidaba su jardín mientras sus nietos jugaban.)
Neil trabajaba en el garaje mientras Carrie cantaba canciones de Taylor.

•To express a description in the past.

​(La casa era blanca.)

​

• To express point of origin in the past.

​(El hombre era de Perú.)

​

• To express time in the past.

​(Eran las nueves de la noche y los niños dormían.)

​

• To express one’s age in the past.

(Ella tenía 20 años cuando se graduó de la universidad)​

​La semana pasada yo caminé 5 kms.
Cuando niña yo caminaba al colegio.

​Melisa iba a cine cada (each) fin de semana.

Melisa fue a cine el fin de semana.​

La semana pasada toqué el piano en un concierto.

Cuando yo era niño tocaba el piano todos los días.​

​Remember that the preterit is a completed action.

The imperfect is often an action that was repeated in the past.

Antes yo leía mucho.

Betty vino a verme.

Andrés me dijo que Betty venía a verme.​

​She arrived yesterday.

She arrived at five o'clock every day.

Last week I read a good book.

Before I used to read a lot.

Andrés told me that Betty was coming to see me.​

​Me levanté a las seis esta mañana.

Cuando era niño me levantaba tarde.
