Horizontal Number Line
Which end to the positive numbers lie?
and the negative numbers?
5
Now we have two number lines.
The original number line still goes left and right, but the new number line goes up and down. Now we have a two dimensional representation. The two number lines combined are called a coordinate plane. We can not only put numbers on our number lines, but also to the left, right, up, and down of the number lines.
6
Horizontal Number Lines
Positives count right
Negatives count left
7
Vertical Number Line
Which end to the positive numbers lie?
and the negative numbers?
8
Vertical Number Lines
Positives count up
Negatives count down
9
Now imagine overlapping a vertical and horizontal number line at the zeros
10
11
The Coordinate Plane
The horizontal number line is call the x-axis
The vertical number line is called the y-axis
12
The Coordinate Plane
The number lines intersect at the origin, point (0, 0)
The graph is split into 4 sections call quadrants.
Notes where quadrant 1, II, III, and IV are located.
Time to show what you know...
