4.3.4 Practice - Be the Critic

You will now do an art critique of a 1739 painting by French artist François Boucher called Morning Coffee.

Describe:

From the title, we can tell that this is a painting of a family sitting down to breakfast. There is a man serving something, a seated older woman, a seated younger women, and two small children. They are in a lavish, sun-filled room adorned with curtains and elaborate, sophisticated decorations.

IDENTIFY:

  • François Boucher was a Rococo painter

  • The highly decorated interior — especially the gold-trimmed mirror — indicates that this is most likely a Rococo interior.

  • Even without the title and artist information, the visual elements indicate that this is a Rococo painting. The setting is a very adorned domestic space and the expressions of the figures suggest whimsy and delight.

  • lavish, adorned, decorated, or fanciful.
