GELL
Goal: Students will be able to recall concepts learned from semester 1
Evidence: Quizizz responses
3
Ever since people had the ability to think, they've wondered, how does the world work?
Science is one of the places where we go to try find the answer to that question.
The Purpose of Science
4
To start being a scientist, you need to have a cause/effect question you want to answer. Here are a few examples:
Does listening to music have an effect on exam scores?
Does the type of shoe have an effect on how fast you run?
Does the type of food you eat effect how you feel?
Does the type of makeup have an effect on the amount of attention?
Does the type of filter have an effect on the number of insta likes?
How do you Science?
Step 1: Have a cause/effect question
5
Before you start your experiment it is important to guess the outcome before you begin.
When you finish the experiment you can compare what you thought was going to happen and learn from your predictions.
How do you Science?
Step 2: Hypothesis
6
To create a fair test you must make sure the experiment has at least 3 components.
Independent Variable: This is the factor that the scientist changes to see if it has an effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable: This is what the scientist measures. This way they know exactly how much the independent variable is impacting the test.
Control Variable: Only one variable can be changed at a time. Everything must be done exactly the same for a test to be considered fair.
How do you Science?
Step 3: Experiment setup
7
Multiple Choice
Does listening to music improve test scores?
What is the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE in this experiment?
Type of music
Test scores
8
Multiple Choice
Does the type of shoe have an effect on running speed?
What is the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE in this experiment?
Shoe type
Running speed
9
Multiple Choice
Does the food you eat change how you feel?
What is the DEPENDENT VARIABLE in this experiment?
Food
Feeling
10
Multiple Choice
Will this filter get more likes on Instagram?
What is the DEPENDENT VARIABLE in this experiment?
Filter
Likes
11
Once you have measured how much the dependent variable changes with the independent variable, then you can look at the numbers, identify patterns and learn from them.
How do you Science?
Step 4: Analysis and Conclusion
12
Speed: Measures how far an object travels and how long it takes arrive.
Acceleration: Measures increase or decrease in speed.
Measurements
13
Multiple Choice
How do you calculate speed?
Distance divided by time
Time divided by distance
Distance multiplied by time
Speed divided by time
14
Multiple Choice
How do you calculate acceleration?
Distance divided by time
Time divided by distance
Distance multiplied by time
Speed divided by time
15
Isaac Newton discovers gravity.
The bigger the object is, the more gravity it has.
Planets are REALLY big objects so everything gets pulled towards them.
Objects in space act differently because they're not influenced by gravity.
Motion and Forces
16
Newton concluded that whether an object is moves or not is directly related to the forces (gravity) acting on the object.
Motion and Forces
17
Open Ended
How do you apply force to an object?
18
Open Ended
What can a force do to an object?
19
Multiple Choice
How do you calculate force?
Mass times acceleration
Acceleration divided by speed
Force times distance
Acceleration times Time
20
Multiple Choice
What is the NET FORCE and DIRECTION (of net force)?
6 N left
6 N right
3 N right
3 N left
21
Open Ended
Newton wrote 3 laws to predict an object's motion. Can you state the laws?
22
Open Ended
According to Newton's 1st Law, an object at rest will
23
Multiple Choice
According to Newton's 2nd Law, heavier objects need ____ force to accelerate
more
less
24
Multiple Choice
According to Newton's 3rd Law, for every force there is another equal force acting in the _______ direction.
same
opposite
25
When a force is applied to an object to make it move across a distance energy has been spent.
When you push a box to make it move, you have used energy in your body to make this happen.
Energy is the ability to make change occur.
Energy
26
Open Ended
Can you name the 12 types of energy?
27
28
Open Ended
Energy cannot be c______ or d________.
29
Potential Energy
All objects have the POTENTIAL to do work or cause change.
Potential Energy is energy that COULD be used, but for now it does nothing so it is stored.
30
Kinetic Energy
The word "kinetic" comes from the Greek word "kinesis" which means motion.
Kinetic energy can be passed from one object to another in the form of a collision.
31
Thermal Energy
When stuff is warm, we call that thermal energy
Objects are hot when their atoms are vibrating really fast.
Thermal energy is a form of kinetic energy because of the motion from the vibrations.
32
Chemical Energy
Stuff also explodes, we call that chemical/nuclear energy
When bonds between atoms are broken or formed, energy is released. This is called a chemical reaction.
33
Multiple Choice
What is being circled?
Atoms
Molecules

Molecules
35
Open Ended
What happens to atoms during a chemical reaction?
36
Open Ended
Matter cannot be c______ or d________.
37
Light Energy
We have seen stuff shine, we call that light energy
The Electromagnetic Spectrum includes all kinds of light. The human eye can only see visible light
38
Sound Energy
We can also hear noises, we call this type of energy sound energy. It can also be called sonic energy.
Sound is the energy things produce when they vibrate
39
