• DATA is a collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or just descriptions of things.

• There are TWO types of data:

  • Qualitative Data - this type of data describes something (words, phrases)

  • Quantitative Data - this type of data gives numerical information (numbers)

When you do research, you are trying to answer your questions. Often, your research involves looking for “trends” and “patterns.”

Trends & Patterns

• TREND: A general direction in which something is developing or changing (e.g., the popularity of different genres of songs changes over time)

• PATTERN: A pattern is a series of data that repeats in a recognizable way.
