author hope to have on
the readerʼs
understanding of America?

Mentor Response
Analyze whether this student provided a
claim, evidence, and reasoning to fully
develop the response.
19
The author hopes the reader will realize the value of the
United States being a place where many cultures cross, rather
than thinking of it as a single culture. The author begins the
article by showing how cross-cultural the United States
actually is, stating that a “blurring of cultural styles occurs in
everyday life in the United States.” Then, he explains how it got
this way, and finally concludes by saying, “The world is here.”
This statement is meant to show that the United States is
special because it is a place where all of the cultures in the
world are represented and work to form something not found
elsewhere.
Claim about the reader’s
understanding of
America?
Evidence to support this
new understanding.
Reasoning that explains
the effect of this new idea.
What score does this response earn?
Why? Provide justification from the
rubric.

It’s your turn.

about Reed’s
intended effect on
